Challenges

Enabling AC power device that harnesses photovoltaic electricity generation during the day to optimize power delivery and sell excess generation to the grid at night to gain additional revenue

Solution

Embedding of Bluetooth and Wireless modules and PCB backed by software development and services to enable rich features for Sunbooster POWERSTATION GRID hardware

Use case

Optimized management of power storage, domestic consumption and distribution to the grid

Key features

PCB design Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules App and software development Data security and compliances with EU regulations

For customers with photovoltaic (PV) balcony storage units, the system will optimize the charging schedule of the battery, to ensure PV generation can be self-consumed to the maximum extent possible. But most importantly the system also turns excess PV production into additional revenue streams.

  • Reduce the payback period of Solar + Battery (this accelerates adoption and scale the solution)
  • Helps maximize PV self-consumption
  • Allows participation in power wholesale markets
  • Enhances energy security

Sunbooster, based in Graz, Austria, is a specialist in mobile solar technology, focusing on the development of innovative and sustainable energy solutions. The company has teamed up with Acceleronix for developing this functionality in its latest product. The innovative Sunbooster POWERSTATION GRID, the first plug & play power station turns excess PV production into additional revenue streams through ancillary services participation.

The system relies on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to enable flexible management of PV-generated energy.

Simply plugged into a conventional socket, solar energy generated during the day is stored by the existing PV system and automatically fed in at night to cover the base load of the user’s home, with the excess able to be sold to the utility.

The POWERSTATION GRID’s featuring unique key advantages:

  • Weather protection against UV radiation, rain and fine
  • Protection of the LiFePO4 battery cell from low temperatures in winter
  • Easy accessibility in the apartment or house

Control via wireless app
Thanks to built-in WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the POWERSTATION GRID is easily connected via WLAN and controlled via an app on the user’s smartphone. This provides full control over charging, feeding in or the individual outputs, even when users are away from home.

The POWERSTATION GRID allows precise settings for storage and feeding. The feed into the power grid can be adjusted in 50-watt increments (between 100 and 800 watts), which allows precise control and optimizes energy management. In addition, an unlimited number of time slots can be set for storage and feeding in. This means that the POWERSTATION GRID can be adapted to individual needs and daily routines, which increases the efficiency of your balcony power plant and improves your self-sufficiency.

To make the POWERSTATION GRID a reality, Sunbooster teamed up with Acceleronix to develop the entire system including

  • Device’s printed circuit board (PCB) including Antenna
  • Communication module based on WiFi
  • Cloud-based front-end (based on AccerlonixCore IoT platform)
  • Backend software development
  • Mobile App design service, including support for publishing it on App Store and Google Play Store.

Thanks to Acceleronix partnership with AWS the cloud servers are based in Germany, which ensures unapparelled security and reliability.

The App publishing services includes the entire process of preparing the App for public availability, including submission to the app store, review by the platform, and eventual availability to users.

A fast forward experience
“Working with Acceleronix has been a very fast forward experience,” says Stefan Ponsold, the founder and CEO of Sunbooster. “We’re a start-up which means we are very fast in development and a very small, lean organization. Working with Acceleronix, it took us just two to three weeks to set up prototypes in our account.”

“Then we did the tests and found we could always look into the system and test the Bluetooth connection,” he adds. “The Bluetooth and the connection to Wi-Fi always worked without any problems. We’ve also designed our own app with Acceleronix which is a great partner because as soon as we have a problem, a few minutes later somebody returns with a new idea.”

“I personally have more than 15 years of experience in developing smart products and IoT development and here we got the chance to start with low quantities of a few dozen units and grow to the thousands,” Ponsold concludes. “The next step is tens of thousands. This partnership from the beginning has helped us growing in the right direction with team members collaborating back and forth. In 2024, this is how a product should be developed.”
